This Community Activism Art Initiative of a single orange coloured maple leaf with an empty heart at its core is a memorial tribute to residential school children who were never returned to their homes and their families who have grieved their loss for decades.
It is also a symbolic demonstration of empathy, love, and compassion towards First Nations people for the profound injustices they continue to endure. The goal of this art is to show that we can collaborate towards healing in our society. The art invites inquiry and awareness.
Tribute donations of used children's footwear typically accompany this exhibit. Made from orange t-shirt strips, this art embodies the memory of the precious gift of an orange shirt given by a grandmother to her granddaughter, a residential school survivor, who wore that shirt on her first day of school.
