A Transliteration [and place to call home] is an homage to a sense of place, both remembered and found. Restaurant and building materials are used to tie together moments of sentiment and sanctuary, ever emerging from ethereal memories and dreams.

The site-specific central piece “Toronto, Canada” is a Japanese transliteration of the city and country name. It acts as a visual touchstone—an intent to serve as a joyful recognition for those who speak the language. It transforms a foreign wall into a canvas of belonging, offering a moment of familiarity and connection.

Fashioned from thousands of handmade porcelain cherry blossom petals, the work is a metaphor for a blooming identity. The petals, a quintessential symbol of Japan, signify not only a cherished heritage but also a heartfelt message: You belong here. Your traditions are not just a memory; they are a vital, soulful part of growing in a place to call home.

By celebrating the beauty of a single language, “Toronto, Canada” aims to resonate with all who have left their countries of origin behind. It is an invitation to recognize that every language, culture, and unique life story contributes to the vibrant tapestry of our shared community.
